HOW TO USE RECHARGEABLES CORRECTLY

In the following section, we will tell you what you need to know about proper handling of rechargeables and put an end to all those persistent myths.

The great thing about rechargeables is that they can be recharged again after they have been discharged. So not only are they much better for the environment, they cost less and save you time because you do not have to constantly buy new batteries. 
Rechargeables are a suitable solution for items that are used frequently or require a great deal of power, such as toys, gaming consoles, cordless phones, photoflashes, digital cameras or solar lights. To ensure that you maximize battery life, you need to store, charge and use rechargeables in the proper way.

USAGE

In the past, using rechargeable batteries was something of an inconvenience. Once purchased, the batteries had to be recharged for several hours before they were finally ready for use. This is one reason why many opted for standard batteries rather than rechargeables, even though rechargeables would have been more suitable the device in question. Thanks to VARTA’s Ready To Use rechargeables, those days are gone: they come pre-charged and can be used straight out of the package.

CHARGING

A rechargeable battery will last up to 500 charge/discharge cycles, depending on its capacity. However, the infamous term “memory effect” is still commonly heard. But what is the “memory effect“? A “memory effect” occurs especially in older types of nickel-cadmium rechargeable batteries, which gradually lose capacity when repeatedly recharged. The battery “remembers” the old charge and reduces its storage capacity. VARTA’s nickel-metal hydride batteries are not only more powerful than previous nickel-cadmium batteries, but also have the advantage that they do not develop a "memory effect.”

STORAGE

Rechargeables should be kept cool (10°C - 20°C) in a dry place. Let’s get one thing straight right away: rechargeables should never be kept in a refrigerator ‒ storage at room temperature is fine. It’s also better to leave batteries in the original packaging. This prevents them from coming into direct contact with other batteries or metal objects, which can cause them to short circuit.

It’s also no longer a problem if the rechargeable batteries are not used for longer periods: They have a very low self-discharge so there’s no need to recharge them between uses.

However, you shouldn’t leave the battery in a fully discharged state for very long as this leads to a deep discharge of the battery, which means that the remaining voltage drops to such a low level that it is possible that it can no longer be charged.
As you already know, batteries are best stored at room temperature. You should also avoid exposing rechargeable batteries and chargers to high temperatures when you are using and charging them. So it’s better not to leave them in sunny places, on a window sill or in a hot car.
